I appreciate your nuanced view on this Ethan. I have been in a cycle of loss and gain for 30 years. Finally decided to try a GLP-1 after a great convert with Spencer. Now a year later and 130lbs down(90 GLP-1) the changes are stunning. Doing krav maga, trail running, indoor rock climbing…buying clothes off the rack in a non fat guy store. It’s repaired my relationship with food. I think these meds are a miracle.
GLP-1’s are what finally saved my life. After I was diagnosed with diabetes, my doctor put me on one. It completely changed everything - EVERYTHING - about how I approached food. Two years and 170 pounds later, I’m almost at my goal weight. I’ve been on a diet since I was 12. All I ever did was get fatter. These meds are truly transformative.
Ethan… I am only an onlooker, who began enjoying your acting in “My Name Is Earl” many years ago, and caught a random post of yours and was immediately impressed: by your achievements and your ability to articulate the saga therein…😌💕
I am simply glad to have seen your post and happy to read your musings… I find them entirely relatable and honest💕😌
Really enjoyed this read. You do a great job empathizing with those of us in bigger bodies and the way these solutions can be such a source of support and freedom. I’m anxious to see more research come out on the long term effects as well as the mental health implications. 👊🏽
Great article. I have done a lot of research on Glp-1’s. Not because I want to try them, but out of genuine interest. I have been on my own health journey since Christmas of 2023. I have been on short health kicks in the past, but this one is different. It is a lifestyle change coupled with understanding of what I was doing to myself. Now I may be a little different in that I am legitimately enjoying the journey. I don’t focus on the scale, I enjoy my workouts and I look for progress on lots of front to keep me moving. But I know others don’t or can’t have the same journey. So I don’t begrudge anyone for trying or using GLP-1’s. The negative outcomes of the extra weight are far greater than the risks associated with the use. I just hope that those who use them seek professional guidance on the necessary lifestyle changes that are needed to be healthy after the peptides are removed. But to your point..the future for weight loss and potential for healthy living is very different than it was 5 yrs ago.
Man, I remember taking ephedra (I can't remember the brand name but they called it the ECA stack) in middle school around 1996 because I wanted to lose weight so I could play football with people my age instead of the high schoolers. What a wild unintentional first drug experience - I was up til 3 in the morning with my heart pounding, but I did indeed start shedding pounds. Until it was banned 😂
Just found your substack via an Instagram post of all things. I've never read such an accurate reflection of my own weight loss journey, which has itself exposed a far more important self awareness and self acceptance journey. Perhaps there are those whose weight is isolated from their sense of self, but not based on my sample of one.

Brother, I’m SO happy for you! And bouldering sounds incredible and terrifying!
Thank you man!

Hydroxycut! I think that's what it was called
